UNIDO ITPO Italia

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) works towards improving the quality of life of the world’s poor by helping countries achieve sustainable industrial development.

With its Headquarters located in Vienna, Austria, and UNIDO is represented in some 42 countries either by a designated country or regional office or by a UNIDO Desk located within a UNDP country office. Additionally, it operates a network of Investment and Technology Promotion Offices (ITPOs), Investment and Promotion Units (IPUs), National Cleaner Production Centres ed International Technology Centres.

The Italian Investment and Technology Promotion Office became operational in 1987 with financing from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs – General Directorate Cooperation to Development. The Office’s mandate is to support SMEs competitiveness in developing countries.   by facilitating the transfer of the financial, technological and managerial resources necessary to implement industrial projects. These projects are meant to promote productive employment, competitive economy and a sound environment. ITPO provides a range of services to enterprises from partner search to financial evaluation of investment projects. In addition, assistance is provided to Institutions.

In 2007, UNIDO ITPO Italy celebrates twenty years of activity. During this time frame, the kind of services provided has gradually changed. With increasing economic relationships among countries, and an easier access to information and investment opportunities thanks to technology and communication progress, the Office has shifted its activities towards more targeted products and services such as: custom-made country programmes, sectoral programmes, economic and technical feasibility of industrial cooperation projects. Specific attention is being devoted to environmental and energy issues. Further, within the framework of Decentralized Cooperation – whereby Italian local public administrations have become an active part in international cooperation activities– UNIDO ITPO Italy has started selected projects with Regions and local bodies.

The Office is part of the ITPOs network. ITPOs are located in Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, China, Korea, France, Greece, Japan, Poland and United Kingdom. It also cooperates with the Investment Promotion Units (IPUs).  IPU are located in selected Mediterranean countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan and Egypt) and in Serbia, with a Support Unit. They represent an operational platform that promotes and maintains industrial relations between Italy, the Mediterranean area and the Balkans by facilitating direct contacts among enterprises and hence cooperation agreements. Both networks share a common database, Exchange, that fosters dialogue between institutions and firms and improves information dissemination.

To date, UNIDO ITPO Italy has facilitated 1339 negotiations between Italian and foreign firms thus contributing to the conclusion of 453 industrial projects, out of which 169 became operational generating 529.25 USD million of private investments (data 2006).
