Background

The EXPO 2015 Universal Exhibition in Milan aimed to identify and advocate the world best approaches and practices towards a more prosperous, harmonious and environmental-friendly future of our planet.

The event has been a unique international window for Italy to promote successful technologies and business models for the benefit of developing countries and regions, linking them to local traditions, creativity and innovation.

By hosting more than 130 countries, EXPO 2015 has set up new global possibilities and scenarios for an equitable development for all, with the ultimate common goal should be that everyone has access to food, health, energy and sustainable development

Few weeks from the closing of the EXPO 2015 at the end of October, EXPO Milan can be described as a mission accomplished thanks to the joint efforts of participating countries, international organizations, institutional actors and enterprises engaged in showcasing innovative and successful solutions in sustainable agribusiness.

Presently, there is a wide consensus that EXPO 2015 was just one page of a book which all national and global stakeholders must all continue writing together. This goal can be achieved by continuing to promote projects centered on knowledge, experience-sharing, practical know-how and actions in line with the principles and the legacy of EXPO 2015, the Milan Charter.

After EXPO 2015, one of the most important international windows and opportunity for Italy is  MATERA 2019. Matera has been selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2019 and has assumed a challenging commitment: to create and share new cultural, social and economic models dwelling on its vast cultural and historical heritage. One of the goals of Matera, as European Capital of Culture in 2019, is to play a key international role of aggregation by mobilizing collective knowledge as a tool for sustainable and innovative use of cultural and natural assets, of reconnecting art, science and technology, people and ideas.

Against this background, the launch of a “MATERA Pavilion of Knowledge” described hereunder, will aim at consolidating and ensuring continuity between the vision and mandate of EXPO 2015 and Matera 2019, fulfilling one of the commitments of the Milan Charter i.e. strengthening and supplementing the international network of projects, actions and initiatives that constitute a significant collective resource”.

The mission of the virtual “MATERA Pavilion of Knowledge” is to mobilize, share and host, year-round, international experiences and knowledge, best practices and testimonials around selected development subjects. The topics might include, inter alia, creativity and business, entrepreneurship development, valorization of the territory and branding, women economic empowerment, innovative agribusiness solutions etc. Topics will be defined by all concerned parties every year based on their relevance to the mission and priorities of Matera 2019, European Capital of Culture.

To ensure continuity with the mission and the vision of EXPO 2015, the first activity of the virtual Pavilion of Knowledge will be a kick-off workshop to take place in Matera on 14-15 December 2015 around the subject: When Creativity meets Business: Sharing Stories of Women Entrepreneurs for Local Development.

The choice of this theme is not casual but it is based on the international attention that gender equality and women empowerment received at EXPO 2015. A special initiative Women for EXPO was launched to emphasize the importance of women economic empowerment and its development impact.

It is worth noting that women are often secondary actors in creative industries or services despite the fact of their know-how and creativity in this domain. Institutional and economic support can really make a difference for women in this promising sector. Thus, the creative industries may represent a huge opportunity for women to develop their entrepreneurial talent in the future and that’s why promoting women entrepreneurship in creative industries can be a true catalyst to the accomplishment of real gender equality of opportunities.

The goal of this Workshop is to present successful business models and evaluate the development and economic impact potential of creative industries and agribusiness on local economies and gender equality. The Workshop will promote an open debate and experience sharing by bringing together women entrepreneurs, with focus on the agribusiness sector, representatives of business and financial organizations and institutions and other relevant stakeholders from African, Mediterranean and Arab countries.

By hosting and launching this first workshop, MATERA Pavilion Knowledge will convey a unique message which is crucial in the international development agenda: the need to focus the world’s attention on the theme of “promoting women-led enterprise development” as the key feature to assure sustainable and inclusive local development.

The Knowledge Pavilion would also act as potential marketplace to match foreign and domestic SMEs and investors, innovative and green technology seekers and supplies, potential business partners from Basilicata, Italy and abroad.

The workshop and the following ones will seek synergies and cooperate closely with other initiatives and projects implemented by Sviluppo Basilicata and Regione Basilicata particularly with the Project Mapping Basilicata. The goal of this project is to strengthen the Basilicata Clusters and promote enterprise internationalization by upgrading domestic industries (SMEs) and creative clusters (furniture, food, fashion) and creating a brand to facilitate the access of their products into the global markets.

With the launch of the MATERA Pavilion of Knowledge, Regione Basilicata and Sviluppo Basilicata will also have access, through UNIDO ITPO Italy, to other expertise and technical services of UNIDO (business, investment and technology, agro-industry, trade capacity building), as well as to the UNIDO Networks worldwide, in particular the UNIDO ITPO Network.
