Online - 10th June 2021
Organized by UNIDO ITPO Italy in collaboration with UNIC - Italian Tanneries and CITEccal (the Center for Innovation in Production and Technology Transfer of Leather, Footwear and Related Industries) in Arequipa, the webinar “Best practices towards a sustainable tannery sector in Arequipa” was hosted on 10 June 2021.
The initiative, in the framework of the project “Fostering international partnerships between companies and/or institutions operating in the energy and environment sectors” funded by the Italian Ministry for Ecological Transition and implemented by UNIDO ITPO Italy, was aimed at exploring how tanneries from the Industrial Park of Río Seco in Arequipa, Peru, can implement cleaner and more eco-friendly production techniques, with the goal of promoting inclusive and sustainable development within the local sector through the adoption of circular economy models.
Moderated by UNIDO ITPO Italy Chief Technical Advisor Dino Fortunato, the online conference was opened by the welcome remarks of UNIDO ITPO Italy Head Diana Battaggia and UNIC Deputy Head Luca Boltri, with an overview of the sustainability of the leather industry in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
The main panel session featured the technical interventions of UNIC Sustainability Manager Fabiana Orlandi - with an insight on the leather supply and value chain in terms of processing, safety and recycling - and Roberto Vago, Managing Director of ASSOMAC, the Italian National Association of Manufacturers of Footwear, Leathergoods and Tanning Technologies, focusing on multiple systems and techniques for efficient waste-water treatment, also providing a success case of Italian excellence.
The online event was concluded by a final Q&A session, during which participants had the opportunity to actively join the discussion and interact with the panelists by asking insightful questions and furthering the debate on specific topics of interest.
