UNIDO ITPO Italy’s webinar "The Italian model for the collection and management of electrical and electronic waste (WEEE) in Kazakhstan" was successfully held online on Thursday 3 February 2022, as a part of the project "Fostering International Partnerships between companies and/or institutions operating in the Energy and Environment sectors"(#FIPEE) funded by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and implemented by UNIDO ITPO Italy.
Attended by 88 participants – among which 64 Kazakh companies – the conference was moderated by UNIDO ITPO Italy Investment Promotion Expert Mr. Enrico Siepi and opened with the institutional welcome remarks of: Ms. Diana Battaggia, Head of UNIDO ITPO Italy; H.E. Mr. Marco Alberti, Ambassador of Italy in Nur-Sultan; Mr. Mansur Oshurbaev, Director of the Department of State Policy and Waste Management at the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan; and Mr. Paolo Angelini, Coordinator of environmental collaboration with Eastern countries, Asia and China at the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition.
The technical panel session started with an overview of the current situation and problematics of e-waste management in Kazakhstan performed by Ms. Vera Mustafina, UNIDO ITPO Italy Special Advisor in Energy and Environment in the country, and Ms. Aizhan Ryskulova, Deputy Director of KazWaste, Kazakhstan’s waste management association.
From the Italian side, the Director General of the Italian RAEE Coordination Center Mr. Fabrizio Longoni introduced the Italian environmental policies and organizational role of Italian consortia in the collection, management and treatment of WEEE, followed by a highlight on cutting-edge technologies for WEEE management and treatment by Mr. Giuseppe Piardi, President of ASSORAEE and Vice President of FISE UNICIRCULAR.
Finally, the panel concluded with the closing remarks of Mr. Asset Baisynov, Counselor at the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Rome, followed by an active Q&A session during which the online attendees had the opportunity to pose several interesting questions directly to the panelists.
Fostering the exchange of know-how and best practices in the field between Italy and Kazakhstan, this webinar by UNIDO ITPO Italy paves the way for future follow-up activities promoting policy dialogue, cooperation and economic relations between Italian and Kazakh stakeholders in the sectors of collection, management and treatment of WEEE.
