Mazara del Vallo (Tp) - September, 15-16th 2011
UNIDO, within the agenda scheduled for the Mozambican Delegate, organized the visit to one of the most important European Districts, the Productive District of Industrial Fishing at Mazara del Vallo. With 142 companies and over 2000 employees, the District in Mazara represents an outstanding body for the productive activities carried out in Sicily. The visits included more specifically the Cantieri Navali sites, Matteo Giacalone srl, Alfa Cold, Frigortecnica and were organized as part of the Delegates Programme carried out by ITPO, in relation with the Mozambican projects in the fishery sector. Mr. Gil Bires from the CPI – Centre for the Promotion Investments, is participating in the Delegate Programme UNIDO ITPO Italy, and is promoting a portfolio of projects mainly focused on the agro-food and fishery sectors.
During his visit, the Delegate had the opportunity to visit the Cantieri Navali company, a leader in the fishing boats construction for both fishing and recreation activities. Mr. Bires also had the opportunity to assist during the reparation process of a medium-sized fishing boat, thus learning the different techniques available.
Concerning the conservation of fish products, Mr. Bires visited the company Matteo Giacalone srl, which holds an important experience for many years in the sector of fisheries conservation. The aim of the visit was to directly have a look at the freezing and refrigeration plants, currently used by the majority of the operators working in this sector. The systems used on board of the fishing boats were of particular interest, as they are suitable to the Mozambican boats. These on-board systems are considered highly useful for small size boats by the Mozambican Delegate.
<>Regarding the processing plants, the Delegate had the opportunity to examine several machineries and assembly models designed and provided by Frigortecnica with the engineering contribution of Alfa Cold. In particular, two refrigeration machineries for the shrimp processing were considered, given the huge potential of this particular crustacean in Mozambique.
Finally, ITPO staff took part in an interesting meeting with Mr. Giovanni Tumbiolo, President of the District. Mr. Tumbiolo expressed the willingness to cooperate with the Republic of Mozambique in order to develop the fishery chain, and possibly participate in a preliminary mission on-site. Mr. Bires and the ITPO staff will work closely on this opportunity, with the aim to strengthen the ties between the business sector in Mozambique and the one in Italy, and spur direct investments and technology transfer in the fishing industry in Mozambique.
