Rome, 24 September 2020 – On 23 September UNIDO ITPO Italy hosted and moderated its webinar “Doing Green Business in Peru”, a virtual country presentation with the goal of fostering trade, technological innovation and investment in the energy and environment sectors between small and medium enterprises in Italy and Peru.

The initiative was the first episode of the Webinar Series “Doing Green Business”, organized by UNIDO ITPO Italy in the framework of the project “Fostering international partnerships between companies and/or institutions operating in the energy and environment sectors” funded by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea.

Attended by over 50 participants from relevant institutional and professional stakeholders in the field, the online conference notably opened with the remarks by Mr. Paolo Tonini, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Peru, and eventually concluded with final remarks by Mr. Pablo Cisneros, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Peru in Italy.

The multi-panel discussion featured interventions by Mr. Enrico Condemi, Director for Bolivia, Chile and Peru at the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) focusing on business dynamics between Italy and Peru; Ms. Milagros Sandoval, Director of Greenhouse Gas Mitigation at the Ministry of Environment of Peru, who promoted sustainable best practices for local development; Mr. Severo Buenalaya Cangalaya, Power Generation and Transmission Manager at OSINERGMIN, illustrating the national energy matrix and potential for sector investment; Mr. Andrea Pavia, Business Manager at the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Peru, presented opportunities for Italian companies in the local water management sector; and Ms. Karin Granda, Special Projects Director at PROINVERSIÓN, providing an operative framework for water sanitation in the country.

Peru has the lowest country risk in the region and its energy matrix is predominantly based on hydrothermal power, with great potential for alternative sources – including solar, wind and biomass. Addressing the impact of climate change on national traditional supplies and poverty rates in rural areas, innovative water management systems and the transition towards green energetic models are key for sustainable local development.

Giving an overview of the current market situation and of specific geographic areas for targeted interventions, “Doing Green Business in Peru” successfully advanced institutional and business cooperation between Italy and Peru, facilitating potential partnerships among Italian and Peruvian SMEs for investment opportunities in the energy and environment sectors.
