Ethiopia: Training "Remote sensing and participatory approach for sustainable forest management"

Attended by 33 representatives of Ethiopian institutions and companies operating in the field, UNIDO ITPO Italy's technical training "Remote sensing and participatory approach for sustainable forest management” was held on Thursday 17th February 2022. A two-hour webinar with open discussion, aimed at illustrating different tools and methodological approaches in forest management and conservation for sustainable development of the sector in Ethiopia.

Moderated by UNIDO ITPO Italy's Investment Promotion Expert for Ethiopia Ms. Ester Temperato and Special Advisor for Energy and Environment in Ethiopia Mr. Fasil Abate Hagos, the panel featured the participation of experts from both Italy and Ethiopia: namely, Dr. Francesca Giannetti, Researcher at the University of Florence, presenting tools for satellite imaging and mapping of forest disturbance and degradation; Mr. Guido Milazzo of Bluebiloba Srl, highlighting the importance of capacity-building activities in local communities for a long-lasting, day-to-day impact; and Mr. Bizuayehu Alemu from the Ethiopian Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission (EFCCC), providing an overview of the Ethiopian landscape and forest scenario and its need for innovative technologies and know-how toward sustainable development.

Successfully concluded with a participated Q&A session, this initiative was organized in the framework of the project “Fostering international partnerships between companies and/or institutions operating in the energy and environment sectors” (FIPEE) funded by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and implemented by UNIDO ITPO Italy.
