Larderello - Rome, Italy - 10th - 14th October 2022

Study Tour on Geothermal Energy in Italy for a Kenyan Delegation

From 10th to 14th October 2022 UNIDO ITPO Italy assisted a Kenyan institutional, business and academic delegation composed by three representatives of the Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK), the Geothermal Development Company and the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in a study tour on geothermal energy in Italy between Rome and Larderello.

The study tour kicked off with members of the delegation actively joining as panelist and moderator the conference “Accelerating Geothermal” by Enel Green Power and the International Geothermal Association (IGA); the second day featured exciting field trips to several geothermal sites in Larderello, one of the most important hubs in Europe; while in Rome, the delegates took part in the ZeroEmission Mediterranean - International Conference and Exhibition, joining multiple B2B meetings with local exhibitors and attending the conference “Clean and Renewable Geothermal Energy” by Unione Geotermica Italiana (UGI).

The initiative - part of the project "Fostering International Partnerships between companies and/or institutions operating in the Energy and Environment sectors" (FIPEE) funded by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition (MiTE) - successfully allowed the Kenyan delegates to learn about Italian innovative best practices and know-how in the field, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrial development in the geothermal sector of Kenya, in line with the mandate of UNIDO and the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

On the last day the delegation took part in the signing ceremony of the partnership agreement between GAK and UGI, notably held at UNIDO ITPO Italy premises at the presence of MiTE, the Embassy of Kenya to Italy and further relevant institutions, companies and academia in the field.
