UN Day: World Food Day 2015

EXPO Milan , October 16th 2015 – UNIDO Italy was invited to attend the World Food Day 2015 Opening Ceremony, one of the most important events of the universal exhibition, which was devoted this year to the subject 'Social protection and agriculture to break the cycle of rural poverty'  to celebrate  the 70th anniversary of the FAO founding.

The last ceremony of the EXPO Milan three days dedicated to the UN was opened by the welcoming speech of the President  of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. In this occasion, he stated that "Only a collective action to promote equal access to natural resources and sustainable management of the production processes can eradicate malnutrition and poverty". This mission is possible thanks to FAO support, which has its headquarter in Italy since 1951. One of the most meaningful moments was the intervention of the General Secretary of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, who received the “Charter of Milan” directly from the Minister of Agriculture, Maurizio Martina. This document represents the collective effort for the right to food and is also the intangible heritage of EXPO 2015.

The event continued with the remark made by the FAO Director General - José Graziano da Silva , who thanked the farmers , fishermen , forestry workers and all the food industry workers for their contribution to the" extraordinary achievement "of increasing livelihoods despite the world population has tripled since 1945. In this context the Director General declared that the new sustainable development goals achievement to become 'Zero Hunger Generation' not only depend on governments but on each individual.

Among others, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, the Minister of Agriculture, Maurizio Martina, the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, Kanayo F. Nwanze, the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, Ertharin Cousin and the mayor of  Milan, Giuliano Pisapia intervened in the conference. Even the President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, and the Queen of Spain Letizia, special ambassador of the FAO Nutrition project attended the event.
